canada day jazz

Chris had rehearsals for RENT all day and our couchsurfers decided they wanted to see Whistler, so I was left to my own devices for my first Canada Day back in Canada in some time (and first in Vancouver proper). I started on Granville Island, which definitely had a family-arty bend to it. There was some terrific jazz (it was the last day of the jazz festival), including this guy, who's part of Whiskey Chief. I then passed by the art gallery in time for a huge puff of smoke at 4:20, went back home for a quick bite - it's nice to have a home base close by - and then caught one of my favourite bands, Spirit of the West, giving a free concert at Canada Place. The parade that followed was the best I've seen in Vancouver and the best overall in a long while - all dancing, community groups, police, bands - the good stuff, no corporations. We finished by watching the fireworks from the top of our building with a bottle of wine and our guests. A great Canada Day!
