silver lake sand dunes

Boy did we have a busy day today! We started it at the location of this picture - Silver Lake Sand Dune, one of the many dunes on the coast of Lake Michigan. The largest inland coastal dunes in the world reside here. After being dumped on by a huge storm, we took a giant dune buggy ride over and through the dunes. A visit to (and up) the local lighthouse followed, then a few wineries after that. The last winery (Clay Avenue Cellars) was the best. It was run by a guy who was big into local business. He made fruit wines from local fruit, bottled it in Michigan-made bottles, and had even saved a 1920s-era gas station and set it up as his place of business because there weren't many buildings left from that era in town. He talked with us for some time, giving us many wine samples while we chatted. It was a stupendous way to end a great day.
