the basilica cistern

Our goal today, our last full day in Istanbul, was to visit the immense cistern under the city. Built, again, during the Byzantine era by Justinian I, this immense cistern provided water for a good portion of the city. It wasn't the only one, just the largest. At the time, it was filled up to the ceiling, but that wouldn't make for good tourism, so there's just a few inches on the ground now, with walkways over top.
