These amulets are very common around here. Most people have them around their house or in the concrete, hoping to avoid evil omens and curses. People still give out curses and believe in them - I saw an article about them in the paper the other day - and therefore these still sell. They're made of glass and if they break, it's because the charm stopped a curse or some bad luck. This person apparently really wanted their house protected.
