the tombs of the nobles

We visited our first tombs this morning - the tombs of the nobles here in Aswan. Pretty small, but the people who were buried here were still important, keeping the pharoahs' power present in the southern reaches of their lands. There was still some great carving and some excellent painting - this is the stuff that get me going now, it's really quite detailed and amazing up close.

In the afternoon, we wandered around a modern Nubian village on a tiny island in the middle of the river - lots of colour, it was really pretty. We sat at a cafe and had tea, then took a felucca (sailboat) over to the botanical gardens for a quick walk through and back to catch the sunset on the river. A gorgeous day.
