four month tradition

One of my student's baby brother came in today with his mom for what is apparently a very old tradition here in Taiwan. The child has a necklace of cookies put around his/her neck and older kids come and break one off and offer it to the child before eating it. It supposedly will make the children happy (because he has friends who offer to share their cookies with him) and healthy (not sure on this one - because the baby is around a bunch of grubby, dirty children?). It was kind of neat to see, though, and the kids all got cookies in the middle of the morning, so they were happy.
