Out of Quito and into the cloud forest. We wanted to get to this wonderful natural phenomenon, these tropical forests high in the mountains, and there was a great little town not two hours from Quito - hard to imagine such a difference in such a small amount of time. We're staying in a hostel that has its own orchid garden, so we spent much of today - the morning, really, as it tends to rain every afternoon - just wandering around, looking at some of the 200 varieties of orchid they have here. That may sound like a lot, but it's a drop in the bucket compared to the 3500 orchid types Ecuador is known to contain.
This little guy grows no bigger than your fingernail. We saw one that was the size of the head of a pin. I had no idea orchids could be so small.
