tracking the noise

Every night I hear what sounds like an industrial vacuum cleaner out in the street, sometimes as late as one in the morning. Tonight I finally discovered what it was - the drain cleaners. They stopped right under our window and an unbelievable stench floated up as they worked. Blech.
