happy whatever, indonesia!Posted by Ryan (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) on 27 August 2007 in People & Portrait. Plaza San Martín is often a place of celebration for various important government events - I mean, it IS named after the founding father. I've seen numerous wreaths laid there for this and that, and today was no exception. There were Argentine and Indonesian flags entwined in the lamps, a red carpet laid out, and a full military outfit playing and, uh, standing. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the arrival of the Indonesian foreign minister and the hoopla associated with it, but I saw the lead-in. The thing that baffles me is this: what were they celebrating? Indonesian Independence Day was recently - August 17th - but wouldn't it be kinda rude to congratulate someone ten days late? The only other thing that I can find on this day related to Indonesia is the eruption of Krakatoa 124 years ago, but that's not really something to celebrate. Of course, it could be a governmental event - the first day Argentina opened relations with Indonesia - but I like a mystery.
