evita's death day

Posted by Ryan (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) on 26 July 2007 in People & Portrait.

Fifty-five years ago today, Eva Peron, a.k.a. Evita died in the Casa Rosada to the sorrow of millions of Argentines throughout the country (and thousands filling the streets of the capital). To this day, people by the hundreds visit her family's tomb on her death day (a tradition I've described before but find no less odd), flowers and pictures overflow the narrow sidestreet where her grave is, and people sing songs and whisper prayers while bowing their heads. (One woman was walking around with a placard saying St. Peron and was happy to have her picture taken.) I can't think of another person anywhere that still inspires such reverence and devotion.
